John Hastings (from whom the name of the firm is derived) was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature in England on 22nd May 1885. He became the 45th solicitor to join the Roll of Proctors, Attorneys and Solicitors practising in Hong Kong when he was admitted on 10th November 1886 shortly after his arrival in the territory.
In 1887, he joined the partnership of Wotton and Deacon and became the senior partner of Deacon & Hastings in 1897.
He ventured out on his own on 1st January 1904 as Hastings, John, Solicitor, Conveyancer, Proctor, Notary Public, Patent and Trade Mark Agent. In 1906, George Andrew Hastings, a solicitor and notary public, joined the firm.
By January 1907, the partnership became Hastings & Hastings.
John Hastings was one of the seven subscribers to the Articles of Association of the Law Society of Hong Kong on 19th March 1907 and retired 4 years later.
In 1923, with the retirement of George Andrew Hastings, the firm was re-named Hastings & Hastings, Dennys & Bowley, and adopted the name of Hastings, Dennys & Bowley in 1926.
The firm acquired its present name of Hastings & Co. in 1934 and the first two Chinese solicitors admitted as partners were Peter Ping-Lam Li in November 1967 and Tony Kai-Tung Wong in April 1972.
In 1993, Hastings & Co. expanded its comprehensive coverage to China with the opening of the Shenzhen Branch Office approved by the Ministry of Justice of Beijing.
